Anna Romano can sense them a block away when she steps off the bus in the Italian Market and heads to Villa di Roma, the family restaurant where she began serving garlic bread and chicken Sicilian half a century ago as a 20-year-old waitress. These days, the aroma leads her just past Villa’s iconic red tile facade to the storefront where her brother Basil DeLuca, 66, always saves his big sister a pre-shift snack of one of the meatballs he’s made by hand almost every day for the past 25 years. Along with the family’s slow-steeped red gravy, it’s a cook-by-touch morning ritual taught to him by Uncle Sammy years ago. He’s now passing it down to daughter Carmella and granddaughter, Rita; due to the smaller size of their hands, they’ve upped the number of fistfuls of Pecorino in the recipe to keep the flavor right.
